10 Points on the Gaza Crisis

1- Palestine is home to Masjid al-Aqsa, the second house of worship to be built on Earth, following Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. It is also the first qibla of the beloved Prophet ﷺ and the destination of his miraculous night journey. Al-Aqsa and the Palestinian cause is firmly connected to our deen. It is not just a political struggle, or a nationalist struggle; it is an Islamic concern and struggle. Allah (swt) declares the sacredness of al-Aqsa: Glory be to the One Who took His servant ˹Muḥammad˺ by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.  (Al-Isra’, 1) 2- Three generations across seven decades of the Palestinian people have endured Israeli oppre

The Role of Du’a in Liberating Palestine

The Muslims throughout the world are making   du’a  for Palestine, but the relationship between   du’a  and action needs to be clearly understood otherwise it will lead to the abandonment of an Islamic obligation and the displeasure of Allah (Most high). At the time of the Prophet ﷺ the oppressed people of Makkah made du’a to Allah (swt) asking Him to rescue them from the oppressors (الظَّالِمِ) by sending them a protector (وَلِيًّا) and a helper (نَصِيرًا). This responsibility of fighting to rescue them fell on the believers, and it was the Messenger ﷺ and Sahaba (ra) who responded and liberated Makkah from oppression. Allah (swt) says:  وَمَا لَكُمْ لَا تُقَاتِلُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَالْمُسْتَضْعَفِينَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ وَالْوِلْدَانِ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا أَخْرِجْنَا مِنْ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ الظَّالِمِ أَهْلُهَا وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ وَلِيًّا وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا مِنْ لَدُنْكَ نَصِيرًا “What reason could you have for not fighting in the Way of Allah – for th

Audio: Islamic Governance, Caliphates and Emirates with Iyad Hilal and Kamal Hussain

Since the demise of the Ottoman Caliphate, the Muslim world has moved from one crisis to another. The parlous state of the ummah is now the subject of many discussions and numerous Islamic groups have attempted to find the magic formula to reverse this decline. Invariably and correctly, the subject of a return to Islamic governance has become a rallying call for many that seek to return to a place where the ummah was a leading one. Yet recently, the rise of ISIS and the return to the Taliban government has given us two very different yet for some, very troubling models of how a shariah ruled state should run. Beyond these examples, contemporary Islamic study on the topic either negates well-known Islamic precedents found in our tradition or offers models of authoritarianism where a caliph has the control over all and is one step away from repression.  Today we have brought together two Islamic thinkers and scholars that have been working for some time on rethinking Islamic gove

Shaykh Abdalqadir as-Sufi on Government Scholars

Now, what we have at the moment is – we have no fuqaha’ ! It is as simple as that. What do I mean by that? I mean we have ‘ulama’ , but they are castrated, metaphorically speaking. They are impotised, they are unmanned, politically speaking. Why? Because they have assembled a vast body of knowledge – no one will argue it. They can quote you hadith from morning to night. They can make commentary on Qur’an from morning to night. How many will make prayer from night to morning is not our business. But these men cannot impinge on the social process. I was visited by a man from Qatar, who presented himself as this Islamic authority and an Islamic leader. He said, “Kitab wa Sunna”. I said, “How can you say, ‘Kitab wa Sunna’, if you work for this Amir, when this and this, and more that you know that I do not know is haram and should be punished and is unacceptable?” He said, “Oh, he is a very nice man, he is a very charming man, but he is rather stupid and he does not unders

The Betrayal of Palestine

Let us be blunt and direct. The normative Islamic solution for Palestine, and for any other occupied land, is to liberate the land through Jihad. It is not permitted to accept any permanent peace with an occupier, or to ally with them in any way whatsoever. As mentioned by Allah in the Quran – إِنَّمَا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ قَاتَلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَأَخْرَجُوكُم مِّن دِيَارِكُمْ وَظَاهَرُوا عَلَىٰ إِخْرَاجِكُمْ أَن تَوَلَّوْهُمْ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُمْ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الظَّالِمُونَ “Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion – [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.” While the land remains occupied, the obligation to liberate it falls upon every Muslim until the obligation has been fulfilled. What does that mean from a practical perspective? After all, the average Muslim is unable to

Thus spoke Ruwaybidah?

Are we witnessing one of the portents relating to the final hour? The aḥādith of the ‘ Ruwaybiḍah’ is often mentioned in various contexts and has been feature of traditional Islamic works of ‘ Fitan ,’ relating to signs before the day of judgment, including before the arrival of the cursed false ‘messiah’ – the Dajjāl . Textually, the traditions do not relate to a legal topic. As such, when cited they are not utilised in relation to developing or substantiating jurisprudence ( fiqh ). Rather, depending upon authenticity, the text relates to a possible description of a future state of events, where deception reigns. A fixed moment in time is not specified, but rather a period prior to the coming of the Dajjāl . Some in the contemporary era have given a rating of fair or good ( ḥ asan ) to a particular narration that mentions the ‘ Ruwaybiḍah ,’ others to the set of traditions overall. Partly this seems to be on the basis that there are other channels of reporting which it is h

Macron’s Separatism Bill — a new liberal inquisition

I was asked to put together a political briefing on Macron’s so-called bill to outlaw separatism. Here is an edited copy (with thanks to Zakaria K). The ‘separatism’ Bill announced by Emmanuel Macron on the 2nd October is currently working its way through the institutions of the French executive. The proposed law is called the “Bill to Reinforce Secularism and Republican Principles”, the term ‘separatism’, once considered, has been removed. The Bill looks to update the 1905 law that officially separated church from state. The French Minis t er of interior, Gérald Darmanin announced on BFMTV 3 weeks ago that the completed draft will be presented to the Conseil d’État or Council of State. This is a quasi- legal branch of the French state that looks at bills to make sure it conforms to the French constitution. Based on the fragments that announced beforehand, it seems there are some constitutional difficulties with the bill. For example, the odd statement by Mr Darmanin th

Intolerance is at the Heart of Liberalism

The incoherence of liberalism is going to need a better defense than the one offered by Douglas Murray.  Liberalism, as Douglas Murray rightly points out in his Spectator piece, is in the dock and subject to a new “cultural revolution.” Murray’s piece reflects an ever-growing pessimism across western societies that the edifice upon which liberalism was built is giving way to a “woke” progressivism concerned with curtailing free speech and toppling statues. In this new world, young people exhibit an illiberalism that would, in Murray’s mind, not be out of place in a “Talibanised” society.  For Murray, Britain and the West face an existential crisis. Saving liberalism requires the idea to be defended and reasserted. Liberalism today is facing challenges from within and without, most notably because of the rise of nationalism. This well-trodden and rather pessimistic forecast is captured in Edward Luce’s gloomily titled book, The Retreat of Western Liberalism . Yet Mur
