A to Z of Ramadhan

The Obligation of Fasting It is only when Allah (swt) revealed the Ayah, "O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that they may learn self restraint", (2: 183) fasting was made obligatory. Another Ayah that emphasizes this obligation is: "Ramadan is the month in which we sent down the Quran, as a guide to mankind, also clear (signs) for guidance and Judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during the month should spend it in fasting, but if any one is ill or on a journey, the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you; he dose not want to put you difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and glorify Him in that he has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful". (2: 185) Was there any fasting before fasting in Ramadan became an obligation question? The Messenger (saw) used to fast in the day of Ashura w

Ramadhan: Past & present

The following is a transcript delivered on this subject some time ago. Allah (swt) says, “The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and Al-Furqan.” [TMQ-Al-Baqarah: 185] "Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you many gain Taqwa" [TMQ 2:183] ¨ Today I am going to discuss another element related to ramadhan, the history of Ramadhan – what key events took place in the past during this blessed month, during the life of the Prophet (saw) and the generations that followed him. ¨ Many of us may know that Ramadhan is a month of blessing, a month of reward, a month of fasting. However many of us may be unaware of that Ramadhan was a month of victory for the Muslims in the past and a month when many battles and conquests took place. First Revelation

The Evil Scholar

Know that craving after status and position inevitably causes great harm before its attainment due to the striving necessary to attain it, and also afterwards due to the person's strong desire to hold onto it which produces injustice, haughtiness and other evils. Aboo Bakr al-Aajurree, who was one of the wise scholars and teachers at the start of the fourth century, wrote a treatise about the manners and the sentiments of the scholars and it is one of the best works on this topic. One who studies it will know from it the way of the scholars of the Salaf, and will know the innovated ways contrary to their way. So he describes the evil scholar at length, from this description is that: "He has become infatuated with love of this world, and with praise, honour and position with the people of this world. He uses knowledge as an adornment just as a beautiful woman adorns herself with jewelry for this world, but he does not adorn his knowledge with action upon it." He then menti

Fighting corruption

The following is from The Daily Star, Bangladesh: Corruption is an age-old phenomenon which needs to be addressed in a practical way. During the Caliphate of Hazrat Umar (R) one tax collector brought two bags and placed them in front of him saying one is for the Baitul Mal (govt. treasury) and the other for him. When asked how he obtained the bags for himself, the tax collector replied that the people donated the money willingly. The Caliph dismissed the man and asked him to go to the people now for donation (after losing the job) and deposited both the bags to the treasury. So corruption was there in every age in different forms and shape but it is the duty of the head of the govt. to see that his administration remains free of corrupt people. It is sad that people who are placed very high in our government and in society are corrupt tax evaders. These people are also coming in front of camera, talking about the country, shedding tears for the welfare of the people and what not! They

Pakistan’s political future

The following is a letter to the editor that appeared in The Hindu national english newspaper in India: Pakistan’s political future is being secretly fashioned by Washington. It is expected that Pervez Musharraf will soon appoint himself the civilian President and announce elections for PPP leader Benazir Bhutto to contest. Once again, the U.S. and the West will decide the destiny of one of our neighbours. It can only be seen as an unholy political marriage between a leader who presided over the most corrupt regime and a general who has betrayed the nation’s interests. The military dictator has been given a political lifeline. It exposes the West’s supremacist quest to export its ideology of ‘freedom and democracy.’ Muhammad Sayeeduddin Masood Hyderabad Source: http://www.hindu.com/2007/09/07/stories/2007090754671203.htm
