Is the “Science” of Sociology Really Universal?

Sociology’s claim to objective scientific inquiry was once assumed to be a given. In more recent times, it has come to be thoroughly questioned even within academia itself. With reference to the writing of Sheikh Taqiuddin Nabhani, br Shafiul Haq explores this turn in the questioning of sociology’s universal applicability. In his book “The Islamic State”, Shaykh Taqiuddin An Nabhani discusses the problem of: “lending culturally based subjects, such as sociology… unnecessary respect and erroneously classifying them as universal sciences.” He mentions the error of letting these disciplines affect our reading of the primary Islamic texts, whereas we should be referring to the Islamic sciences to gain a sound understanding of the religion. So, Shaykh Nabhani  problematises sociology’s claim to being a scientific discipline of universal applicability. He rather describes it as a cultural discipline. By ‘cultural’ what is meant is that sociology, far from being objective, is actu

The Ideological Underpinnings of Modern Science

Many in the da’wah field have at some point attempted to use science to show Islam’s progressiveness, openness to “advancement” and inquiry. But is modern science ideologically neutral? And if it isn’t, is it something to be proud of if someone proved Islam to be true through science, or that Islam brought “science”, in the way it is meant today? Brother Shafiul Haq explores. Many of us, especially those in the da’wah scene, attempt to reconcile Islam with science. In fact, we even go as far as to prove the truth of Islam through science. I have perhaps done the same on many occasions. I remember once during a discussion with a few brothers, one of them said something along the lines of Islam “placing restrictions on science”. I argued that science is universal, neutral, objective. Hence, Islam does not restrict scientific inquiry. The brother then asked if Islam would allow us to scientifically investigate the origins of the universe. I was stumped. I didn’t know (and still

Q&A: Gaps in Conduct do not Strip a Muslim of his Islamic Aqeedah

Question: Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh May Allah bless you our honorable Sheikh, and grant you victory and reward you with good. Our honorable Sheikh, It came in the book,  The Islamic Personality, Volume I  that there are actions that contradict the Aqeedah that Muslims do, but they do not divest them from the Aqeedah, and it was clarified that the Muslim may inadvertently fail to associate his concepts with his Aqeedah (creed) or he may be ignorant of the contradiction between such concepts and his Aqeedah or his Islamic Shakhsiyya (personality) or Shaytān (Satan) may influence his heart and thus cause him to distance himself from this Aqeedah in one of his acts… So how can he remain a Muslim when he does an action contrary to the Islamic Aqeedah? If a Muslim makes Takfeer (considers him a Kafir) of his Muslim brother, wouldn’t that then make the description befallen one of them, and his enunciation here is Kufr? I know that actions include words or

What Comes After Brexit?

What Comes After Brexit? News: Last week, the British Prime Minister Theresa May triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and sent a formal notification to the EU about Britain's decision to leave the union. Britain’s divorce from the EU comes after a period of 44 year s , and will last for a period of 2 years. The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to galvanize the country to work together during the separation period. She said, “We are one great union of people and nations with a proud history and a bright future. And now that the decision has been made to leave the EU, it is time to come together.” The President of the EU Council Donald Tusk struck a conciliatory note and said there was “no reason to pretend this is a happy day” adding there was “nothing to win” and that now the Brexit process was about damage control. Brexit is now fueling intense speculations about the future of the European Union. Comment: No matter how hard British and European offici
