The situation in Afghanistan is far worse than being portrayed by politicians and the media. It is important that we educate not only ourselves but also those around us as to the plight and suffering of our Muslim brothers and sisters. For some time, the Conservative government has been attempting to pass a motion to extend Canada’s mission in Afghanistan until the year 2011. With support from the Liberal government, this motion was passed and Canada is now dedicated to another 3 years of war that NDP defence critic Dawn Black described as, “…a futile mission that will achieve nothing but more broken lives." Defence Minister Peter MacKay would disagree with this assessment and has cited examples of achievement in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.
