Successive Western governments and politicians have employed the language of feminism and its movements in order to further their colonial interests in the region. They generated and propagated a narrative that Muslim women needed saving from the 'oppression' of Islamic laws and rule as well as liberating through the Western culture and system. This was in order to morally justify their colonial intervention and wars in the Muslim lands and strengthen their foothold in the region. The flag (Liwaa) is white, on which it is written "La Ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad Rasul Allah" with black script. It is tied to the leader (Amir) of the army and is used as a sign ('alam) to him. The evidence for this is what was narrated by Ibn Majah: «أن النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دخل مكة يوم الفتح ولواؤه أبيض» "That the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم entered Makkah on the day of its conquest while raising a white flag."
