Today, over 88 years ago, the then British Foreign Minister Lord Curzon warned, “We must put an end to anything which brings about any Islamic unity between the sons of the Muslims. The situation now is that Turkey is dead and will never rise again, because we have destroyed its moral strength, the Caliphate and Islam”.
In 2011,we have seen mass protests across the Middle East and North Africa in a unbeleivable show of resilience against tyranny and denial of the rights of the people. Yes, this is the first step to breaking the shackles of humiliation that people have been living through. Indeed this is the first step in a series of steps fr Muslims to wake up and realise that Islam, their Deen is awaiting its declaration for Implementation.
The idea of Caliphate, Khilafat, Hilafet, Khilafah is resounding throughout the Muslim world with millions demanding back its restoration. The Khilafah in Islam is the central vehicle through which the Shariah is implemented. It is the pen which allows the ink to flow and write and without which Islamic laws are in suspension, making the Quran and Sunnah derelict.
Today, Khilafah is being muddied by Western Governments and tarnishing it with labels like extremist, oppressive, abusive to women, lack of human rights to fight the growing tide of support the Muslim world is demanding with the implementation of Shariah law.
Today, Western governments have bought out muslim voices to condemn Khilafah and make claims that it is not needed, or it is a relic of the past, or that Islam has no politics and no government and instead advise people to practice Islam in their hearts and in their house.
Classical Islamic Scholars and Contemporary Scholars have all detailed that Khilafah is one of the Highest Islamic Obligations for this Ummah. Without the Khilafah, the muslim Ummah today is in an abnormal state like a fish out of the water.
One of the most renowned Scholars from the Indian Sub-continent accepted and praised by all schools of thought Shah Waliyullah Dehlavi (1703-1762 CE) said:
“It is a collective obligation (Fard Al-Kifaya) upon the Muslims for all times to come to elect and install a Khilafah”
To support this Shah Waliyullah give various arguments: Quoting the famous hadith- “Whosoever obeys an Amir, verily he has obeyed me; and whosoever disobeyed the Amir he disobeyed me. amount to disobedience of the Prophet:
He continues
“‘The collective reason of mankind requires that a Khilafah should be there to look after the interests which cannot be achieved without a Khilafah. The Khilafah is appointed for achieving two categories of objective and purposes. The Holy Prophet(saw) was also sent to achieve these two classes of objectives. Therefore after passing away of the Prophet, a Khilafah is needed to succeed him and to implement his orders and commandments. That is why the obedience to the imam is equal to the obedience to the Prophet”
Quoting another hadith “The Imam is a sheild from the back of which the muslims fight and protect themselves” [Muslim]
In Izaalat al-Khafa Shah Waliy Allah quotes another hadith which he says is clear textual evidence (An-Nass in proving that the establishment of the Khilafah is an obligation:
“Whosoever dies without a bayah on his neck dies the death of Jahiliyyah” [Muslim]
“‘The sahaba also rushed to establish the khilafah immediately, after the death of the prophet(saw) and delayed his burial. Moreover there are matters which cannot be accomplished without the Khilafah: the Jihad, the administration of Justice, the revival of Islamic science, the establishment of the pillars of Islam, the defence of Dar al-Islam and such other things that have been collectively enjoined upon the Muslim Ummah." (Hujjat Allah al-Balighah, Vol 1 Hujjat Allah al-Balighah, Vol 2 Izalat al-Khafa, Vol 1Izalat al-Khafa, Vol 2)”
Abu Zayd Wali al-Din Abd al Rahman Ibn Khaldun (732-808 AH) was a scholar of the Maliki Jurisprudence and also worked as a judge in Cairo. He statesL
‘The best kind of state is the Khilafah, which is a system based on the Shariah. This is the only system based on the Shariah. This is the only system which guarantees the fulfilment of all natural and genuine human needs both in this world and in the hereafter. It also guarantees full equality between the ruler and the ruled. The Khilafah is the divine method of politics. Initially it is established by the Prophets and Apostles of God and then run by their successors – the Khulufa. This is the system which has been laid down by God the Almighty Himself, and, hence, no other system can be at par with it.’
Over 87 years since the abolishment of the Khilafah has meant catastrophe after catastrophe for the Muslim world. The Muslim ummah is the richest in natural resources, manpower, army, land, technological capability, wealth and most importantly iman in Allah (swt).
Only a sincere Khilafah leadership can realise that the Muslim Ummah becomes a dignified and leading state which resolves poverty, Education, corruption, occupation, social order and sets a unique path for this noble ummah.
In light of the current protests and challenging of these Godless and tyrannical regimes, the following hadith is once again being given life to.
Narrated by Muslim from Abu Hurayrah who said The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Islam began as something strange and will revert to being strange as it began, so give glad tidings to the strangers.”
