(The Three Different) Types of leadership [Translated]

The following is a translation from Arabic archives.

The leaderships in the Dunyaa are of three types: The creative leadership, the inspirational leadership and the intelligent leadership whilst there is no type of leadership other than these otherwise they would not be considered to be leadership.

The intelligent leadership (Al-Qiyaadah Adh-Dhakiyyah): This is on par with the intelligent man who possesses an aware sensation, a sufficient intellectual wealth (treasure) and is capable of utilising this wealth at its (right) time in the case where he is cap[able of making it accompany the events and proceed with the incidents at their level (as they happen) whilst he does not let himself fall behind them.

In normal days (and circumstances) this type of leadership would be good. However if the situation and circumstances became dark and gloomy (struck by calamities) this leadership would require an exertion of efforts beyond what is normal in order to keep a firm grip over the matters and it would proceed in the leadership of riding along (i.e. to be on par with the events) whilst preserving the level of leadership as it is and free of any mark or scratch.

The inspirational leadership (Al-Qiyaadah Al-Mulhimah): This is on par with the distinguished (brilliant, outstanding) man in the case where he is the first in every matter and refuses to be at the level of the people. Rather he pays special attention and effort to remain the first amongst them and ahead of them. This inspirational leadership is a rare class that refuses to be other than the first in every matter; in understanding, realisation, perfection, seriousness, in overcoming obstacles, in overseeing the tasks and undertaking the actions amongst other matters that are present within the life of leadership. Then above that he possesses the capability to elevate and raise those who are falling and to instigate activity within the sluggish, to bring that which is distance close to those who are short-sighted, to make clear the vision to those whose vision is blurred, to treat the sick and tired and distance the dead from amongst the living. In addition to this he fills the hearts of the people in their emotion and minds with vitality and thought, and their souls with confidence and contentment.

This type of leadership is the same whether it exists within severe crises or in normal circumstances. It proceeds in its leadership without feeling the need to exert effort that is beyond its normal nor does it feel that the burden upon it has become heavy. This is because it feels the severities and meets them with the rapture or pleasure of leadership and they make it sense and feel the sweetness of their burdens. (Translator note: i.e. this leadership welcomes these difficulties and crises).

The creative leadership (Al-Qiyaadah Al-Mubdi’ah): This is on par with the genius man which is one of a kind. The genius is not satisfied with being the best from amongst the people and ahead of them. But rather he comes up with new matters that that the people do not know and then carries them to proceed upon them. So he does not seek perfection in that which they are upon (and exists amongst them) so that he can be the best of them in those matters but rather he only changes that which they are upon and opens up a new path for them and drives them to proceed in that path and even if it contains hardship, strain, exertion and sacrifice. In addition the creative leadership is not satisfied with the directions of the public opinion or what the individuals of the people are upon. So it does not think about taking their leadership but rather it only (works to) elevate the level of the people whilst looking at what lies behind the wall in order to supervise the society and to see what the condition of the wall is without its vision. It then works to overturn what the people are upon and change the direction of the public opinion. After that he attempts to take their leadership and even if it means making their blood and wealth permissible in the way of the thought that they carried let alone the bearing of hardship and suffering (in its path). At that time he assumes the Ummah’s leadership upon the basis of expending and providing the soul, lifeblood, lives and wealth through consent and inner contentment.

This is the creative leadership. Therefore it does not lead the people by their thought but rather it only carries and drives them to change their thoughts. It doesn’t proceed amongst them upon the path that they are proceeding upon but rather makes them proceed upon the hardest path and the most difficult road. Above that it makes the price or cost of their proceeding upon this path of hardship and suffering, and expending the soul and lives in a generous manner in addition to all that is precious and held dearly in terms of wealth. It also does not suffice itself to proceed in the crises as it proceeds in the time of ease without there being a difference between them. Rather it brings about problems, intentionally generates events (incidents) and crises and ignites fires so that it remains proceeding upon the difficulties (and those matters which are difficult to bear). This is because most of its life represents one Jihaad upon another because it believes that the true life is only a life of Jihaad.

An advice to Muslims working in the financial sector

Assalam wa alaikum wa rahmatullah wabarakatahu, Dear Brothers & Sisters, We are saddened to see Muslims today even those who practise many of the rules of Islam are working in jobs which involve haram in the financial sector. They are working in positions which involve usurious (Riba) transactions, insurance, the stock market and the like. Even though many of the clear evidences regarding the severity of the sin of Riba are known, some have justified their job to themselves thinking that they are safe as long as they are not engaged in the actual action of taking or giving Riba. Brothers & Sisters, You should know that the majority of jobs in the financial sector, even the IT jobs in this area are haram (prohibited) as they involve the processing of prohibited contracts. If you work in this sector, do not justify your job to yourself because of the fear of losing your position or having to change your career, fear Allah as he should be feared and consider His law regard

Q&A: Age of separating children in the beds?

Question: Please explain the hukm regarding separation of children in their beds. At what age is separation an obligation upon the parents? Also can a parent sleep in the same bed as their child? Answer: 1- With regards to separating children in their beds, it is clear that the separation which is obligatory is when they reach the age of 7 and not since their birth. This is due to the hadith reported by Daarqutni and al-Hakim from the Messenger (saw) who said: When your children reach the age of 7 then separate their beds and when they reach 10 beat them if they do not pray their salah.’ This is also due to what has been narrated by al-Bazzar on the authority of Abi Rafi’ with the following wording: ‘We found in a sheet near the Messenger of Allah (saw) when he died on which the following was written: Separate the beds of the slave boys and girls and brothers and sisters of 7 years of age.’ The two hadiths are texts on the separation of children when they reach the age of 7. As for the

Q&A: Shari' rule on songs, music, singing & instruments?

The following is a draft translation from the book مسائل فقهية مختارة (Selected fiqhi [jurprudential] issues) by the Mujtahid, Sheikh Abu Iyas Mahmoud Abdul Latif al-Uweida (May Allah protect him) . Please refer to the original Arabic for exact meanings. Question: What is the Shari’ ruling in singing or listening to songs?  What is the hukm of using musical instruments and is its trade allowed? I request you to answer in detail with the evidences? Answer: The Imams ( Mujtahids ) and the jurists have differed on the issue of singing and they have varying opinions such as haraam (prohibited), Makruh (disliked) and Mubah (permissible), the ones who have prohibited it are from the ones who hold the opinion of prohibition of singing as a trade or profession, and a similar opinion has been transmitted from Imam Shafi’i, and from the ones who disliked it is Ahmad Ibn Hanbal who disliked the issue and categorised its performance under disliked acts, a similar opinion has been tran
